Sometimes the term “Package” unit is confusing, but in this case we are referring to a self contained unit that comes pre – assembled. The differences between this and a window unit or PTAC are substantial. First, a package unit usually can cool and / or heat the entire home or building, and this system is connected to a ducting system, unlike the window unit or PTAC. If the unit also includes gas heating, they are sometimes referred to as a “gas pack”.
Package units sit outside the home on the ground or on the roof. A heat pump package unit is similar to a Package Air Conditioner in its look and size.
If you have identified your system as a “Package” unit, but you are not sure it is gas or a heat pump - one of the easiest ways to identify a heat pump is to look at your thermostat. If you have a “back up” or “secondary” heat switch, it’s a good chance that your system is a heat pump.
A gas package unit is similar to a Package Air Conditioner in its look and size. The major difference is the inclusion of a gas heating source. It would have a gas pipe feeding into the unit. These units can be located on the ground or the roof.
Unit heaters are usually found hanging in a garage in residential applications, but normally are not acceptable for heating a home.
