Flagstaff Just Broke Its March Heat Record by 11 Degrees — Is Your AC Ready?

March Just Shattered Local Heat Records

If it felt like summer showed up about four months earlier than normal this year, that's because it basically did. Flagstaff hit 84 degrees this March: the first time in recorded history the city has reached the 80s this early in the year, which is the kind of stat that takes a second to sink in.

And it wasn't just one weird afternoon. According to meteorologist Jeff Masters of Yale Climate Connections, this heat dome is on track to leave Flagstaff with 11 or 12 straight days of temperatures above the city's previous all-time March record. Twelve consecutive days above a record that stood for over a century. In March.

A thermometer reads hot against a blue sky.

For most people up here in the high country, the reaction was somewhere between "okay, that's wild" and "wait, should I be running my AC right now?" And honestly? That second reaction is the more useful one.

When Your HVAC System Wasn't Expecting This Either

Here's the thing about heat waves that arrive this far ahead of schedule — your air conditioning system wasn't expecting them any more than you were. A lot of systems across Flagstaff, Payson, Camp Verde, and the surrounding areas have been sitting in heating mode or just idling through what was supposed to be a mild late-winter stretch. Then temperatures jump 20 or 30 degrees overnight and suddenly the AC is being asked to work hard, right now, with no warm-up period.

That kind of sudden demand has a way of exposing whatever was already a little off with a system — a refrigerant issue that hadn't caused problems yet, a capacitor running on borrowed time, a filter that was overdue for a change and is now choking airflow when you need it most. It's not that the heat breaks systems on their own, it's that it pressure-tests them, fast, and whatever was marginal before tends to become a real problem in a hurry.

Temperatures across Arizona this week have been running 20 to 40 degrees above average, which is the kind of load that pushes HVAC equipment well outside the conditions it was sized and calibrated for. Systems that were keeping up just fine in 65-degree weather can struggle to maintain setpoint when the outdoor temperature is sitting in the mid-80s in a place that's not supposed to see mid-80s until June.

What to Do If Your System Is Struggling

If your AC is running constantly and your house still isn't cooling down, or you're hearing something that doesn't sound quite right, or it just quit on you entirely — this is not the week to wait and see.

A few things worth checking before you call, just to rule out the easy stuff:

  • Make sure your filter isn't clogged. A dirty filter restricts airflow badly enough that even a perfectly functioning system can't keep up, and it's the most common culprit when a system is running nonstop without results.
  • Check that your thermostat is actually in cooling mode. Systems that were in heating mode all winter sometimes need a manual switch, especially older programmable thermostats that don't always make that transition automatically.
  • Look at your outdoor unit. If the fan isn't spinning or the unit is making a grinding or rattling noise, shut the system off and call — running a struggling compressor in this heat can turn a fixable repair into a full replacement pretty fast.

If none of that is the issue and the system still isn't performing, it's time to get someone out there. Aire Serv of North Central Arizona runs 24/7 emergency heating and AC repair services, no overtime charges, because HVAC problems don't really care what day of the week it is or whether it's a convenient hour.

North Central Arizona's Weather Doesn't Do "Gradual"

This is something anyone who's lived in this part of the state for a few years already knows — the weather here doesn't ease into things. Flagstaff can go from a late snowstorm to record-breaking heat inside of two weeks, and the communities down in the Verde Valley and around Payson deal with their own version of that same whiplash constantly.

Prior to this heat wave, Flagstaff had only recorded 23 days in all of March history that reached 70 degrees, and this single event is set to add at least 12 more to that total. That's not a gradual shift. That's a system shock, and your HVAC equipment is absorbing it whether it's ready or not.

The case for getting your system looked at before the next heat event (and there will be a next one) is simple. A tune-up and inspection now, while things are still manageable, will go a long way in mitigating the stress of an emergency repair or system replacement when it's 90 degrees outside.
