An Unsafe Furnace

We just responded to a no heat call on a 30+ year old gas furnace. It was kind of a scary experience. This furnace has no safety devices at all! There is nothing to shut down the gas supply if the pilot light goes out, nothing to shut down the furnace if the flue is blocked. It’s a sad news story waiting to happen.

The moral is, if you have a furnace or boiler from another era, more than 20 years old, it should be safety inspected as soon as possible. It may be time to replace it, as is the case with this one. I know that could mean a large expense, but think of your family’s safety, and the possibility of serious property damage or fire. How much is that worth to you?

The good news is that the homeowner understood the danger and now has a safe, modern gas furnace in its place. He can rest easy, and so can I.
