Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Detectors

Carbon monoxide (CO) detectors help keep your loved ones safe from the odorless, colorless, and tasteless chemical compound. The only way to find CO is with a carbon monoxide detector.

What Causes Carbon Monoxide in a House?

Because this gas is a byproduct of combustion, common sources of carbon monoxide leaks include:

  • Furnaces
  • Fireplaces of all kinds
  • Anything gas powered: generators, refrigerators, lamps, stoves, etc.
  • Water heaters
  • Pellet stoves and woodstoves
  • Cars, trucks, and tractors

Reduce the likelihood of carbon monoxide buildup by regularly maintaining your HVAC systems with Aire Serv.

During any CO services, our service professionals will:

  1. Test the function of existing CO detectors
  2. Recommend installing additional CO detectors (if necessary)
  3. Explain safety concerns (appliances that may require service, ventilation issues, etc.)
  4. Schedule your next annual service appointment

Carbon Monoxide Detector Installation

We recommend installing a CO detector on each floor of your home (including the basement) and in each sleeping area. It’s never too late to add new detectors. Whether you’re building new, adding on, or bringing your space up to code, our teams are here to help you select, install, test, and maintain your CO detectors.

Carbon Monoxide Detector Replacement

CO detectors should be replaced at least every 5 to 7 years, or as per the manufacturers guidelines. When replacing your CO detectors, a member of our team will discuss the timeline for inspections and replacement and schedule your next appointment.

Carbon monoxide detectors do eventually fail. It’s important to replace your CO detector’s batteries and test the unit twice a year, regardless of function—many households choose to do this at the start and end of Daylight Savings Time.

We also recommend having your carbon monoxide detectors professionally inspected once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pre-purchase a CO detector before my appointment?

No. Our team will help you to select the carbon monoxide detector that’s right for you during your appointment.

What is the best place to install carbon monoxide detectors?

Carbon monoxide is lighter than air, so detectors should not be installed low to the ground. The United States Environmental Protection Agency recommends that detectors be installed five feet above the ground or higher.

Install detectors on each floor of the house and in every sleeping area, within earshot. Avoid installing detectors directly above fireplaces or combustion appliances.

Does a carbon monoxide detector detect natural gas?

No. A carbon monoxide detector will not alert you to the presence of natural gas in your home. However, since it’s required that a scent be added to natural gas, you’ll probably smell natural gas if there’s a leak. (CO can’t be detected by the human nose, but natural gas can be.)

How do carbon monoxide detectors work?

CO detectors are equipped with one of three types of sensors: a biomimetic sensor, metal oxide semiconductor, or electrochemical sensor. When the sensor is triggered by carbon monoxide, the alarm sounds. The alarm will not shut off until there is no more CO detected in its range.
