  • Though these systems are called heat pumps, they provide both heating and cooling in a single unit. There are different kinds of heat pumps:

    Ducted Heat Pump:

    • Ducted heat pumps transfer heat between your home and outside
    • In winter, it draws heat from the outdoor air and moves it indoors. In summer, it removes heat from inside your home and releases it outdoors
    • Much like central air, the airflow goes through the ductwork and enters or exits your home through vents

    Ductless Mini Split Heat Pump:

    • A mini-split is an air-source heat pump that doesn't require ductwork
    • An outdoor unit connects to indoor wall-, ceiling-, or floor-mounted units through refrigerant lines
    • Each room that needs air requires its own unit

    Geothermal or Ground-source Heat Pump:

    • Geothermal heat pumps transfer heat with the earth rather than outdoor air
    • Pipes underground carry fluid that absorbs or releases heat
    • Underground temperatures remain relatively stable year-round, so these systems are extremely efficient

The right heat pump for your home depends on your needs, any existing system you may have, location, etc. Our service professionals can help recommend the best fit for your home. You can also find more information about selecting the right heating system on our blog.

  • Whether you already have a heat pump, are looking to upgrade, or need repairs, our team of experts can help!

    Repairs:

    • Inspect System, Indoor Unit(s), and Outdoor Unit: Ask questions about the unit and thoroughly look over the different components for obvious damage, buildup, or other problems
    • Test Thermostat: Thermostats need annual tune-ups as temperatures change. The thermostat calibration and wiring or other issues can cause problems with the unit's ability to function properly
    • Check Airflow: This includes checking air filters, blocked vents, blower motor, evaporator coils, and ductwork leaks. Any needed repairs are discussed. This could include air duct sealing, air duct replacement or repairs, repairing duct insulation, replacing bent coils, air duct cleaning, etc.
    • Test Refrigerant Levels: Check for leaks and run tests
    • Check the Compressor
    • Inspect Reversal Valve: Responsible for switching between heating and cooling; check to ensure it shifts properly
    • Verify System Performance
  • Knowing when to call professionals is key to long-lasting equipment. Having a heat pump lets your home use just one system for heating and cooling, but it also means twice the wear. Here are some common signs your heat pump needs maintenance or repairs:

    • Inconsistent or uneven temperatures
    • Airflow restriction
    • Odd sounds while running
    • Power bills that rise unexpectedly or repeatedly
    • Water or refrigerant leaks
    • Ice buildup on or around your units
    • No heating or cooling
    • Thermostat isn’t communicating with system
    • Unpleasant or musty odors

If you are dealing with any of the above, it’s time to call Aire Serv of Springfield! Even if you don’t have a heat pump yet, these signs are similar for air conditioners, heaters, and other HVAC systems in your home.

Springfield Heating and Cooling FAQs

  • Yes, your heat pump works differently in winter than in summer. Your heat pump switches from heating to cooling on its own, but there are some things to consider for optimized use:

    • Leave the thermostat at a consistent temperature
    • Your unit will run a defrost cycle to melt ice; this is normal
    • Watch for poor heating or significant ice buildup
    • Snow on top of your outdoor unit can be wiped off, but the defrost cycle will melt the sides. Do not wipe the sides, as fins are fragile and could break
