Do older furnaces typically need more frequent repairs?

Age doesn’t automatically mean your furnace needs to be fixed or replaced, but it’s important to note that older systems may struggle and experience more wear throughout Iowa’s long heating season. If you are needing to replace components or call for repairs over and over, you might want to weigh the cost of an upgrade against the repeated furnace repair services.

Why does my furnace smell dusty when I first turn it on in the fall?

A brief dusty smell is normal when your furnace kicks on for the first time after sitting unused for an entire summer. Persistent burning smells, electrical odors, or fuel smells, however, are not normal. If an odor is strong, unusual, or doesn’t go away, turn the system off and schedule a visit from our local HVAC experts.

My furnace is making a loud banging or popping sound. Is that bad?

Some noises are normal for a furnace to make, because ductwork expands as it heats up. A loud bang from the furnace itself, however, or continuing noises, could indicate a mechanical or ignition-related problem. The answer isn’t always obvious, but unusual noises should always inspire a call to Aire Serv of Council Bluffs.

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Cold air coming through your vents could be caused by several things, including ignition problems, airflow restrictions, thermostat issues , or a malfunctioning component. If the air stays cold and doesn’t warm up after a few minutes, it’s a safe bet that it needs professional attention.

Why does my furnace seem to work harder on windy days?

In Council Bluffs, strong prairie winds can make a home feel colder and increase heat loss through windows, doors, and less-insulated areas. If your furnace is running constantly or struggling to reach the desired temperature, there could be an issue with your ductwork or equipment. We’ll be happy to check it out! Contact us now.

Some sounds are very normal for a furnace to make, like a light humming or click when it first kicks on for the season. However, screeching, scraping, or loud banging noises are cause for concern and should be inspected by a professional. Our skilled HVAC specialists can diagnose any strange sounds your furnace might be making. Watch out for these symptoms and contact the preferred furnace repair team in Council Bluffs if you notice:
- Unusual noises - banging, rattling, or whining noises
- Uneven heating - temperature fluctuations, even when the thermostat is set correctly.
- Utility bill spikes - a sudden increase in energy use that can’t be linked to usage
- Yellow pilot light - pilot lights should be blue; yellow indicates incomplete combustion.
- Frequent cycling - turning on and off more than usual, or running shorter cycles without heating.
