How does a ductless mini-split system work?

A ductless mini-split system moves heat between an outdoor unit and one or more wall-mounted indoor units through a small refrigerant line set, with no ductwork needed. Each indoor unit has its own controls, so you can set different temperatures in different rooms. Most mini-splits are heat pumps, which means they provide both cooling and heating.

Is a ductless system right for my home?

A ductless system is a good fit for homes without ductwork, room additions, converted garages, sunrooms, bonus rooms, and spaces that a central system doesn't heat or cool evenly. Mini-splits also work well in older homes where installing ducts would be difficult or costly. A free in-home estimate will show whether ductless or a ducted system is the better choice.

How many indoor units will I need?

The number of indoor units you need depends on how many rooms or zones you want to control separately, along with each room's size, layout, and sun exposure. Many homes start with one single-zone unit, while multi-zone systems connect several indoor heads to one outdoor unit. Your technician will recommend the right setup during the in-home evaluation.

How long does ductless installation take?

A single-zone ductless installation typically takes one day, while multi-zone systems can take one to two days depending on the number of indoor units and line set routing. Little construction is needed because each indoor unit only requires a small opening in the wall. Your technician will give you a time estimate during the free in-home visit.

Are ductless mini-splits energy efficient?

Ductless mini-splits are among the most energy-efficient heating and cooling options because they use inverter-driven compressors and avoid the energy loss that can occur in ductwork. Zoned control also lets you heat or cool only the rooms you're using. These features can lower utility bills, especially compared with window units or electric baseboard heat.

Why Knoxville Homeowners Go Ductless With Us

Thoughtful system planning, flexible payment options, and guaranteed installation.

Aire Serv of Knoxville provides free in-home estimates for ductless installation and replacement. Your technician measures the spaces you want to heat and cool, evaluates sun exposure and insulation, and recommends where indoor units should go for even airflow. You'll get an upfront price by the job, not the hour, before any work is scheduled. Estimates are done in person because no two homes need the same layout. Placement matters, since a poorly located head can short-cycle or leave corners of a room uncomfortable.
Financing makes it easier to add comfort to a bonus room, sunroom, or entire home now instead of waiting for next season. Aire Serv of Knoxville also offers discounts for seniors, military members, veterans, first responders, and teachers. Local promotions change throughout the year, so mention your project when you book your estimate to learn which savings currently apply. Ductless systems also provide heating, so the investment covers year-round comfort in the rooms they serve.
Our licensed technicians handle every ductless installation, Aire Serv of Knoxville is fully insured, and our workmanship and parts are guaranteed. Warranties are available, and each installation is backed by the Neighborly Done Right Promise®. If you already have a mini-split that's acting up, we offer same-day repair service, and the diagnostic fee is waived when you approve the repair. Every new zone is tested in cooling and heating modes before the installation is complete.

How We Install a Ductless Mini-Split

A ductless installation from Aire Serv of Knoxville starts with a room-by-room evaluation to decide how many indoor units you need, where they should be mounted, and what capacity each zone requires. On installation day, the technicians mount the indoor heads, drill a small exterior opening for the line set, and set the outdoor condenser on a level pad or wall bracket. Refrigerant lines, communication wiring, and the condensate drain are connected, then the system is pressure-tested and vacuumed to remove moisture before refrigerant is released. Electrical connections are completed next. The technician then runs every zone in cooling and heating modes, confirms each head reaches its set temperature, and shows you how to use the remotes and clean the filters. Ductless systems are a popular fit for Knoxville bonus rooms, additions, garages, and older homes without ductwork.
