How long does a heat pump last?

Most heat pumps last about 10 to 15 years with routine maintenance. Because heat pumps run in both summer and winter, they often log more operating hours than an air conditioner or furnace alone. Twice-yearly maintenance, regular filter changes, and keeping the outdoor unit clear of debris can help extend the system's life.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heat mode?

A heat pump blowing cool air in heat mode is often in its defrost cycle, which is normal and usually lasts a few minutes. If cool air continues, the cause may be a failed reversing valve, low refrigerant, a faulty defrost control, or an incorrect thermostat setting. Auxiliary heat strips that don't engage on very cold days can also leave the air feeling lukewarm.

Is it normal for my heat pump to ice up in winter?

A light layer of frost on a heat pump's outdoor coil is normal in winter, and the defrost cycle should clear it regularly. Heavy ice that covers the entire unit or doesn't melt within a couple of hours points to a problem, such as a failed defrost sensor, low refrigerant, or a stuck fan motor. Switch the thermostat to emergency heat and schedule a repair.

Why does my heat pump run constantly?

A heat pump may run for long stretches during very hot or very cold weather, which is normal, but constant running in mild weather usually means it's struggling. Common causes include a dirty filter or coil, low refrigerant, leaky ductwork, or a system that's undersized for the home. A technician can measure performance and find the cause.

Should I repair or replace my heat pump?

Repairing a heat pump usually makes sense when it's under 10 years old and the problem is a single component, while replacement is often better for older systems facing compressor failure or repeated breakdowns. Your technician will give you upfront pricing on the repair, and if replacement is the smarter investment, we'll provide a free in-home estimate and financing options.

Heat Pump Service Knoxville Homes Can Rely On

Help for the one system that heats and cools your home all year.

Because a heat pump handles heating and cooling, a breakdown in January or July leaves your home uncomfortable either way. Aire Serv of Knoxville offers same-day service for heat pump repairs, answers calls 24/7, and makes home visits seven days a week. Weekday appointments run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and evening, weekend, and holiday service is available for an added fee when your system can't wait until the next business day. A failed heat pump in winter can also lean hard on auxiliary heat strips, which raises electric bills until the repair is made.
Heat pump repairs are quoted by the job, not the hour, so a defrost board replacement or reversing valve repair has a set price before work begins. Your technician explains what failed and why, then waits for your approval. When you move forward, the diagnostic fee is waived. If an older heat pump isn't worth repairing, you'll get a free in-home estimate on replacement along with information about financing.
Our licensed technicians repair heat pumps from all major brands, including Trane, Carrier, Rheem, Goodman, and Amana. Aire Serv of Knoxville is fully insured and locally owned, our workmanship and parts are guaranteed, and every repair is backed by the Neighborly Done Right Promise®. How We Repair Heat Pumps

A heat pump repair visit from Aire Serv of Knoxville starts by testing the system in both heating and cooling modes, since many problems only appear in one. Your technician checks thermostat settings and the filter, then inspects the outdoor unit's compressor, fan motor, capacitor, contactor, and coil. Refrigerant pressures are measured to find leaks, and the reversing valve, defrost control, and auxiliary heat strips are tested. In Knoxville, light winter frost on the outdoor coil is normal, but a unit that stays iced over or never leaves defrost mode needs attention. After you approve the upfront price, the technician completes the repair, runs a full heating and cooling cycle, and confirms the system switches modes and holds temperature. Because routine maintenance prevents many of these failures, your technician will also point out any parts showing wear.
