Should I Repair or Replace My Heat Pump?

Replacing a heat pump usually makes more sense than repairing it when the system is more than 10 to 15 years old, needs a new compressor, or breaks down several times a year. Heat pumps in Central Florida run nearly year-round, so they accumulate operating hours quickly. Aire Serv of The Villages can give you a repair price and a free in-home replacement estimate to compare.

Why Is My Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air in Heat Mode?

A heat pump that blows cold air in heat mode may be in a normal defrost cycle, which briefly reverses the system to melt frost from the outdoor coil. If cold air continues for more than 15 minutes, the cause could be a faulty reversing valve, low refrigerant, a failed defrost control, or incorrect thermostat settings. Confirm the thermostat is set to heat, then schedule service if the problem continues.

What Are the Signs My Heat Pump Needs Repair?

A heat pump needs repair when it blows lukewarm air in either mode, runs constantly, trips the breaker, or makes grinding, rattling, or loud buzzing noises. Heavy ice that stays on the outdoor unit, frequent switching into emergency heat, and rising electric bills are also warning signs. Scheduling a diagnosis early can prevent strain on the compressor, the most expensive part to replace.

Is It Normal for My Heat Pump to Have Frost on It?

Light frost on a heat pump's outdoor coil is normal during cool, damp weather, and the defrost cycle should clear it within about 15 minutes. A thick layer of ice that covers the coil or builds on top of the unit is not normal. It can point to a defrost control failure, low refrigerant, or a stalled outdoor fan and should be inspected before the coil is damaged.

Year-Round Heat Pump Support in The Villages

One system handles heating and cooling, so repair speed and pricing clarity matter.

A heat pump that fails in The Villages leaves you without both heating and cooling, so Aire Serv of The Villages offers same-day service on every heat pump repair. Live representatives answer calls 24/7 to get your visit on the schedule. Weekday appointments run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and evening and Saturday visits are available for a $199 after-hours charge, with $100 waived when you approve the repair. Call as soon as you notice weak airflow or unusual noises, since quick attention can keep a minor fault from spreading to the compressor.
Our technicians charge a $99 diagnostic fee to inspect your heat pump and pinpoint the problem, and that fee is waived when you approve the repair. Heat pumps have more components than a standard air conditioner, including a reversing valve and defrost controls, so an accurate diagnosis matters. You receive a firm, upfront price for the job before any work begins. Your technician explains which component failed and how it affects both heating and cooling, so you can make a confident decision about the repair.
We service all major heat pump brands, and every repair is warranty-backed and covered by the Neighborly Done Right Promise®. Aire Serv of The Villages is fully insured and locally owned. Financing is available for larger repairs, and discounts are offered to seniors, veterans, military members, first responders, and teachers. If your heat pump is still under an equipment warranty, share that information when you call so we can confirm coverage before quoting parts.

Inside a Heat Pump Repair Visit in The Villages

Heat pump repair from Aire Serv of The Villages starts with testing the system in both heating and cooling modes, since some faults only appear in one direction. Your technician checks the thermostat and outdoor disconnect, then inspects the outdoor unit's capacitor, contactor, fan motor, and compressor. The reversing valve is tested to confirm the system switches modes correctly, and the defrost board and sensors are checked for faults that can leave the outdoor coil frozen. Refrigerant pressures are measured to identify a low charge or leak, and the indoor air handler, blower, and backup heat strips are inspected. Once the fault is identified, you get an upfront price and a clear explanation of the repair. After the work is complete, the heat pump is cycled through both modes to confirm it delivers steady heating and cooling.
