How Long Does a Heat Pump Last?

Most heat pumps last about 10 to 15 years with regular maintenance. Because they run in both summer and winter, heat pumps typically log more operating hours than a central air conditioner. Systems near the end of that range with frequent repairs are often better replaced, and Aire Serv of Kansas City North offers financing and a warranty on new installations.

Is It Normal for My Heat Pump to Ice Over in Winter?

A light layer of frost on a heat pump's outdoor coil is normal in winter, and the system's defrost cycle should clear it within a short time. Thick ice that covers the coil or stays for hours points to a problem such as a failed defrost control, low refrigerant, or a faulty outdoor fan. Do not chip ice off the coil, since that can damage the fins and tubing.

What Are Common Signs of Heat Pump Problems?

Common signs of heat pump problems include lukewarm air in heating mode, warm air in cooling mode, short cycling, and loud grinding or rattling from the outdoor unit. Ice that stays on the outdoor coil for hours, auxiliary heat that runs constantly, and rising electric bills also indicate a problem. Prompt repair can prevent strain on the compressor, the most expensive part to replace.

Why Is My Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air in Heat Mode?

A heat pump may briefly blow cool air during its defrost cycle, which is normal and usually lasts only a few minutes. If cold air continues, the cause may be a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, a thermostat setting issue, or failed auxiliary heat strips. Confirm the thermostat is set to heat, then schedule a diagnosis if the problem persists.

Inside a Heat Pump Repair Visit

A heat pump repair visit from Aire Serv of Kansas City North begins by testing the system in both heating and cooling modes, since many problems only appear in one. Your technician inspects the outdoor coil, fan, capacitor, and contactor, checks the reversing valve and defrost controls, and measures refrigerant pressures. Inside, they check the air handler, blower, filter, and the auxiliary heat strips that support the heat pump on the coldest Kansas City nights. After finding the cause, the technician explains it in plain terms and gives you an upfront price. Once you approve, the repair is completed and the system is cycled through heating, cooling, and defrost to confirm it performs correctly.
