Why Is My Heat Pump Covered in Ice?

A light layer of frost on a heat pump's outdoor coil is normal in winter, and the system's defrost cycle should melt it within a few minutes. Heavy ice that doesn't clear can point to a failed defrost control, a faulty sensor, low refrigerant, or a blocked outdoor unit. Clear snow from around the unit, and if the ice stays, switch the thermostat to emergency heat and schedule repair.

Should I Repair or Replace My Heat Pump?

A heat pump that has reached 10 to 15 years of age, keeps breaking down, or has a compressor failure outside its warranty is usually worth replacing. Newer heat pumps are more efficient and handle cold weather better than many older models. During the visit, you can ask for a repair quote and a replacement estimate to weigh side by side.

What Are the Signs My Heat Pump Needs Repair?

A heat pump usually needs repair when it blows lukewarm air, runs constantly, won't switch between heating and cooling, or stays covered in ice for more than a couple of hours. Grinding, rattling, or buzzing noises and a sudden rise in your electric bill are other warning signs. If your backup heat runs more often than usual, the heat pump may not be doing its share of the work.

How Much Does Heat Pump Repair Cost?

The cost of heat pump repair depends on which part failed, and Aire Serv of Lakewood-Avon quotes a by-the-job price before starting. Your $99 diagnostic fee is applied to the repair bill when you approve the work. Replacing a capacitor or defrost sensor usually costs much less than fixing a refrigerant leak or replacing a reversing valve or compressor.

Why Is My Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air in Heat Mode?

A heat pump blowing cool air in heat mode may be in a normal defrost cycle, which can last a few minutes. If cold air continues, the cause may be a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, a thermostat set to the wrong mode, or a failed outdoor fan or compressor. A technician can test each component to find the problem.

Why Bay Village Homeowners Call Us for Heat Pump Repair

A heat pump problem affects heating and cooling, so speed and clear pricing matter.

Same-day heat pump repair is available from Aire Serv of Lakewood-Avon because a heat pump handles both heating and cooling, and a breakdown affects your comfort in every season. Same-day openings run weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and fill first-come, first-served. In Bay Village, cold, damp air off Lake Erie keeps heat pumps working hard through winter defrost cycles. A fast repair keeps your home from leaning on backup heat longer than necessary, which helps keep your electric bill in check.
You get a single by-the-job price for your heat pump repair, not an hourly rate, and you see it before any work begins. Heat pumps have more components than a standard air conditioner, including a reversing valve and defrost controls, and tracking down the problem can take time. With by-the-job pricing, a longer diagnosis or repair doesn't raise your bill. Your diagnostic fee is also credited directly toward the repair once you approve it, so you aren't paying separately to find the problem.
When a heat pump fails late in the day, Aire Serv of Lakewood-Avon may be able to send a technician on a weekday evening on a limited, case-by-case basis. Heat pump repair is a priority service, so it's eligible for after-hours scheduling when a technician is available. After-hours visits carry a surcharge, and weekend appointments aren't offered. Phones are answered 24/7, so calling right away gives you the best chance at a same-day or evening slot.

How We Diagnose and Repair Heat Pumps in Bay Village

Aire Serv of Lakewood-Avon technicians begin each heat pump repair by checking the thermostat, air filter, and breaker, then watching the system run in heating and cooling modes. They test the reversing valve, which switches the system between modes, and inspect the defrost control board and sensors that keep the outdoor coil from icing over. Refrigerant pressures are measured to check for leaks, and the capacitor, contactor, compressor, and outdoor fan motor are tested electrically. If your system has backup electric heat, that's checked too. Once you sign off on the upfront price, the technician completes the repair and cycles the heat pump through heating, cooling, and defrost. Bay Village homeowners also get tips on keeping snow and leaves clear of the outdoor unit.
