Why Is There Ice on My Air Conditioner?

Ice on an air conditioner's refrigerant lines or indoor coil usually means restricted airflow or low refrigerant. A clogged filter, closed supply vents, or a failing blower motor can reduce airflow over the coil until it freezes, while a refrigerant leak lowers coil pressure and temperature. Switch the system to fan-only mode to let the ice melt, replace the filter, and schedule a repair if the ice returns, since running a frozen system can damage the compressor.

Why Is My AC Not Cooling?

An AC that runs but is not cooling usually has a dirty air filter, a failed capacitor, low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen evaporator coil, or a dirty outdoor condenser coil. Start by confirming the thermostat is set to cool, replacing the filter, and checking that the outdoor unit's fan is spinning. If the air from your vents is still warm, the problem likely involves electrical components or refrigerant, which require a trained technician to diagnose.

What Can I Check Before Calling for AC Service?

Before calling for AC service, check that the thermostat is set to cool and below room temperature, the air filter is clean, the circuit breakers for the indoor and outdoor units are on, and the outdoor unit is clear of leaves and debris. Also look for a tripped float switch on the condensate drain, which shuts off cooling when the drain backs up. If these checks do not restore cooling, schedule a diagnosis to avoid damaging the compressor.

How Much Does AC Repair Cost in Charlottesville?

AC repair at Aire Serv of Charlottesville is priced by the job, and you receive the full upfront price before any work begins. The $125 diagnostic fee is waived whenever you approve the repair your technician quotes. Smaller repairs, such as replacing a capacitor or clearing a drain line, typically cost less than refrigerant leak repair or compressor and fan motor replacement.

Should I Repair or Replace My Air Conditioner?

Replacing an air conditioner usually makes more sense than repairing it when the system is more than 10 to 15 years old, uses R-22 refrigerant, or needs a major repair that costs about half the price of a new unit. Frequent breakdowns and rising summer energy bills point the same way. A newer AC with a single failed part is usually worth repairing. Aire Serv of Charlottesville provides upfront repair pricing so you can compare both options.

Aire Serv of Charlottesville prices AC repairs by the job, not the hour, so you know the full cost before any work begins. After your technician finds the cause, whether it is a failed capacitor, a refrigerant leak, or a clogged condensate drain, you receive one upfront price for the repair. Approve it, and the diagnostic fee is waived. Flat pricing also means the cost does not change if a part is hard to reach or the repair takes longer than planned on a hot Charlottesville afternoon.
Aire Serv of Charlottesville provides AC repair estimates by phone or in person. If you can describe what your system is doing, such as warm air from the vents, ice on the refrigerant lines, or an outdoor unit that hums but will not start, we can talk through likely causes and costs before a visit. For problems that need a closer look, an in-person estimate shows you the repair options and pricing in your home so you can decide with full information.

How We Repair Your Air Conditioner

Every Aire Serv of Charlottesville AC repair begins with a system-wide diagnosis rather than a guess at the most common failed part. Your technician confirms the thermostat is calling for cooling, checks the air filter, and inspects the outdoor condenser for debris, damaged fins, and a running fan. Electrical components such as the capacitor, contactor, and wiring are tested, and refrigerant pressures are measured to identify leaks or a low charge. Inside, the evaporator coil and condensate drain are checked for ice, dirt, and clogs. You receive an upfront price for the repair before work begins. Once the repair is complete, the technician measures the temperature drop across the coil to confirm your system is cooling your Charlottesville home properly again.
