Can a Heat Pump Replace My Furnace?

A heat pump can replace a furnace as your primary heat source while also taking over cooling from your air conditioner. Many homes can use their existing ductwork, though duct sizing and condition should be checked during the estimate. Homeowners who want extra backup heat can pair a heat pump with a gas furnace in a dual-fuel system, which automatically switches to the furnace during the coldest temperatures.

How Long Does Heat Pump Installation Take?

Most heat pump installations take one to two days, depending on the system type and the condition of your home's ductwork and electrical service. A direct replacement of an existing heat pump is often completed in a single day, while converting from a furnace, adding ductwork, or installing a multi-zone system can take longer. Aire Serv of Charlottesville confirms the expected timeline during your estimate.

When Should I Replace My Heat Pump?

A heat pump should usually be replaced when it is 10 to 15 years old and needs frequent repairs, struggles to switch between heating and cooling, or keeps driving up electric bills. A helpful rule of thumb is to multiply the system's age by the repair cost; if the result exceeds $5,000, replacement is often the better investment. Systems that use R-22 refrigerant are also strong replacement candidates.

Do Heat Pumps Work Well in Charlottesville Winters?

Modern heat pumps work well in Charlottesville winters because typical winter temperatures in Central Virginia fall within the range where heat pumps heat efficiently. Cold-climate models can continue providing heat in temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit. On the coldest nights, auxiliary heat strips or a gas furnace in a dual-fuel setup can supplement the heat pump to keep indoor temperatures steady.

How Much Does Heat Pump Installation Cost in Charlottesville?

Heat pump installation cost depends on the system's capacity, efficiency rating, and type, along with any ductwork, electrical, or thermostat updates your home needs. Ductless and geothermal systems are priced differently from standard air-source heat pumps. Aire Serv of Charlottesville provides one upfront price by the job after evaluating your home, and you can request that estimate by phone or in person, with financing options also available.

Why Charlottesville Chooses Aire Serv for Heat Pump Installation

From first estimate to final test, every step is clear and scheduled around you.

Aire Serv of Charlottesville offers heat pump installation estimates by phone or in person. A phone estimate helps you budget early, especially if you are comparing a heat pump with a furnace or deciding between a ducted and ductless system. An in-person estimate lets a technician evaluate your ductwork, electrical panel, and outdoor unit placement, then recommend equipment sized to your home. In-person estimate visits can be scheduled the same day, Monday through Friday.
Aire Serv of Charlottesville prices heat pump installation by the job, not the hour. Your quote covers the equipment and work described in your estimate, so the final cost does not change if installation takes longer than planned. If the evaluation shows your existing heat pump only needs a repair, you can choose that option instead, and the diagnostic fee is waived when you approve the repair. Financing options can help spread the cost of a new heat pump over time.
Aire Serv of Charlottesville answers calls and takes bookings 24/7, so you can request a heat pump replacement consultation whenever the timing works for you. If your current system failed overnight or you want to start planning an upgrade on a weekend, call and reserve a weekday appointment. Installations are scheduled Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and your technician confirms the expected timeline for your Charlottesville home during the estimate.

How We Install Your New Heat Pump

Every heat pump installation from Aire Serv of Charlottesville begins with a Manual J load calculation that accounts for your home's square footage, ceiling height, insulation, windows, and local climate. That calculation sets the right capacity, so the system heats efficiently on cold Charlottesville nights without short cycling in spring and fall. On installation day, your technician recovers refrigerant from the old equipment, removes it, and sets the new outdoor unit on a level pad. The indoor air handler or coil, refrigerant lines, electrical connections, and condensate drain are installed to manufacturer specifications, and the thermostat is configured for heat pump and auxiliary heat operation. The system is then charged and tested in both heating and cooling modes.
