How Long Does a Heat Pump Last?

A well-maintained heat pump typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Because heat pumps run in both summer and winter, they accumulate more operating hours than an air conditioner or furnace that runs only one season. Regular maintenance, clean filters, and prompt repairs extend service life, while frequent breakdowns, rising electric bills, and difficulty switching between modes signal that replacement may be approaching.

Is It Normal for My Heat Pump to Ice Up in Winter?

A light layer of frost on a heat pump's outdoor coil is normal in winter, and the system clears it by running a defrost cycle that may release steam. Heavy ice that covers the entire unit, blocks the fan, or does not melt within a few hours is not normal and usually points to a failed defrost control, a faulty sensor, low refrigerant, or poor drainage around the unit. Schedule a repair if thick ice persists.

How Does a Heat Pump Heat and Cool a Home?

A heat pump moves heat instead of creating it, using refrigerant to pull warmth from outdoor air into your home in winter and remove heat from your home in summer. A reversing valve switches the direction of refrigerant flow between heating and cooling modes. Because it transfers heat rather than burning fuel, a heat pump operates efficiently in Central Virginia's climate, with auxiliary heat strips assisting on the coldest nights.

Why Is My Heat Pump Blowing Cool Air in Heat Mode?

Heat pump air often feels cooler than furnace air because it typically leaves the vents at about 90 to 100 degrees rather than 120 degrees or more. Air that feels truly cold, however, can mean the system is in a defrost cycle, the reversing valve is stuck in cooling mode, refrigerant is low, or the outdoor unit has failed. If cold air lasts longer than a normal defrost cycle, schedule a diagnosis.

How Much Does Heat Pump Repair Cost in Charlottesville?

Heat pump repair at Aire Serv of Charlottesville is priced by the job, with the full price provided before any work begins. The diagnostic visit costs $125, and that fee is waived when you approve the repair. Electrical repairs such as capacitors and contactors typically cost less than refrigerant leak repairs, reversing valve replacement, or compressor work.

Heat Pump Repairs That Fit Your Schedule

One system for heating and cooling deserves fast, transparent service.

Aire Serv of Charlottesville offers same-day heat pump service Monday through Friday, whether your system has stopped heating in January or stopped cooling in July. Because a heat pump handles both jobs, a failure leaves your Charlottesville home without comfort in either direction until it is fixed. Appointments run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and same-day scheduling means a technician can diagnose problems like a stuck reversing valve or a failed defrost control before indoor temperatures swing too far.
Aire Serv of Charlottesville quotes every heat pump repair by the job, not by the hour. Your technician diagnoses the system, explains what failed, and gives you one upfront price before any work begins. If you approve the repair, the diagnostic fee is waived. This approach matters with heat pumps, where problems such as refrigerant leaks or defrost issues can take time to trace; flat pricing keeps that troubleshooting time from adding to your bill.
Aire Serv of Charlottesville answers calls and takes bookings 24/7. If your heat pump is leaning on auxiliary heat overnight or the outdoor unit is encased in ice on a weekend morning, you can call right away, describe the problem, get an estimate over the phone, and claim the next available weekday appointment. Calling early also helps you avoid running auxiliary heat strips for days, which can raise your electric bill quickly.

What Our Technicians Check on Your Heat Pump

A heat pump service visit from Aire Serv of Charlottesville covers both the heating and cooling sides of your system. Your technician checks the thermostat and its heat pump settings, then inspects the outdoor unit for debris, coil damage, and fan operation. Refrigerant pressures are measured to find leaks or a low charge, and the reversing valve is tested to confirm the system switches cleanly between modes. The defrost board, sensors, capacitors, contactor, and auxiliary heat strips are tested next. Inside, the air handler, blower, filter, and condensate drain are checked for airflow problems and clogs. After any repair, your technician runs the heat pump in both modes to confirm it is ready for Charlottesville's swings between humid summers and freezing winter nights.
