When was the last time you had your air ducts cleaned? Can’t remember? Your home and indoor air quality could benefit greatly from a professional air duct cleaning. You know it’s time to clean your air ducts if you notice any of the following:
Unusual Signs of Illness
If you or a family member experiences unexplained allergies or illnesses, these mysterious symptoms could be related to poor indoor air quality. This is often the first sign your ducts need to be cleaned before you even examine the ductwork closely. If you’ve tried other methods to eliminate your symptoms to no avail, duct cleaning could be just what the doctor ordered.
Visible Mold Growth
As your suspicions grow, it’s time to take a closer look at the ductwork. You might spot mold, mildew, slime or other microbial growth in the ducts or on other HVAC system components. Picture spores blowing out of the ductwork every time the furnace or air conditioner turns on. This could be the reason for health problems that only flare up while you’re at home. Mold can also grow on insulation surrounding air ducts. If you find evidence of this, you should replace the insulation along with having the ducts cleaned.
Where does ductwork mold come from? A colony can easily start growing if water enters the picture. A leaky roof is the main source of water damaged insulation and ductwork located in the attic. For this reason, you can’t simply replace moldy insulation – you must also fix the roof leak or the problem will just reoccur.
Do you see evidence of insect or rodent infestation in the ductwork? The first indications might include the sound of scurrying paws or flapping wings coming from your ducts. These disturbing noises warrant further investigation. If you find droppings, nests or other evidence in your ductwork, don’t hesitate to have them cleaned as soon as possible to eradicate the vermin from their makeshift home. Also, attempt to find and seal the entrance point into your ductwork so pests can’t enter in the future.
Look closely at one of your supply registers as the furnace or air conditioner comes on. Excessive dust, cobwebs or other debris blowing from the vent is a clear indication that your ducts are dirty and require cleaning.
Dust and cobwebs aren’t the only things that can blow from supply registers. Musty, rotten or other offensive odors may swirl around your home if the ductwork harbors mold growth, the body of a dead animal or something equally unpleasant. The trick to freshening up your home could be to clean the air ducts.
Comfort problems throughout your home could be caused by a number of issues, one of which is restricted airflow caused by debris. You won’t know for sure until you send a special camera into the ductwork to find out. Then you might be shocked to see dust-covered cobwebs spanning the passageway, blocking airflow as a result. This sight should be enough to convince you that air duct cleaning is in order.
Not only do fiberglass ducts collect more contaminants than sheet metal, but they can also fall apart over time and lead to gaping holes in your duct network. During an air duct inspection, find out what material the ducts are made of and whether they can simply be cleaned or need to be replaced.
